We understand there are a lot of terms that go with ramp selection and purchase.  To make it a bit easier we have listed some of those terms here.

A natural chemical element. In its pure state Aluminum (Al is the periodic table symbol) is a whitish silver, nonmagnetic metal.

Aluminum Mesh Ramps

has all the benefits of maintenance-free aluminum, but the mesh design allows precipitation to pass through, preventing puddles from accumulating.

Aluminum Ramps

provide the user with a strong, maintenance-free modular solution.

Bariatric Ramp

Bariatric ramps are 48” wide and have a larger weight capacity, allowing users in wide wheelchairs or those who have heavy mobility devices a safe and comfortable ramp solution.

There are many organizations available to help you pay for your ramp.

Grade variation

The amount in which a property changes in elevation. National Ramp installers measure the ground elevation at the start and ending points of the ramp to determine if there is a grade variation, and if more or less ramping will be required than the elevation alone would dictate. The starting elevation of the ramp (from the doorway, stairs, porch) plus or minus the change in grade variation determines the total rise with slope, or the amount needed to achieve a 4.8* angle.

Handicap Ramp

A ramp much like a wheelchair ramp that is intended to help someone move from one level to another without the use of stairs.

Incline Plane

An interlaced structure. National Ramp’s open mesh aluminum and steel ramps allow rain and snow to pass through without causing buildup.

Constructed by the assembly of smaller parts.

Pie Section

A turn platform which allows the ramp to be adjusted at a 45* angle.

The angle of the ramp incline. This is confirmed with a digital level at the install.

A flat, level surface used for turns, as a resting platform, or to provide stability at a doorway. National Ramp platforms are available in sizes of 4’x5’, 5’x4’, 5’x5’ and 5’x6’ and may be assembled together to create switchback platforms or extend the ramp around an obstacle.

Portable Aluminum Ramps

Are a strong lightweight solution to the need of a ramp on the go. Simply place the ramp on a curb and get to where you are going.

Pressure-Treated Wood

Pressure treatment is a process that forces chemical preservatives into wood to help protect it from attack by insects and decay.

a simple machine used to assist moving materials up or down a distance.

Ramp Run

The total length of ramping between platforms.

Ramp Sections

The individual ramp pieces connected to make a ramp run. National Ramp manufactures ramp sections in 2’, 3’, 5’ and 6’ lengths.

Rubber Threshold Ramps

allow users to traverse small bumps without jarring side effects.

Safe Ramps

A safe ramp is made from a strong material, installed by a knowledgeable professional at an angle that allows for safe access and has safety measures such as toe guards, handrails and vertical picket rails as needed.

A safe ramp will start and end with a flat, level, hard surface and contain rest platforms so there is no more than 30’ of continuous ramping.

The ramp slope is the total angle of the ramp in degrees. The higher that angle, the more difficult it may be to travel up a ramp.

Steel Mesh Ramps

have the benefit of allowing precipitation to pass through and strong.

Steel Ramps

An inclined slope produced from steel.  Steel is alloy of iron and carbon.  Steel will rust and require maintenance if scratched.

Platform configuration which allows the ramp to turn around to fit more ramping in the allotted space.

Threshold ramps

Also called butt ramps, these small ramps do not have handrails and are designed to assist with travelling over small elevations, normally at doorways and occasionally at sidewalks.

Wheelchair Ramp

A gradual incline that is intended to help a person in a wheelchair up a step or higher.  Remember, it is always best to only go up one inch for every foot long the ramp is.

Wood Ramps

are a beautiful natural material that can be painted or stained to match the exterior of your home. The wood decking is positioned just wide enough apart to allow precipitation to run off the ramp.
